This is a self-paced online/lab course supplementing the ‘Intro to Radar’ series of courses which builds on several ‘build-a-radar’ courses run by the Lincoln Laboratory Technical Education Committee. Students in this course will be allotted the opportunity to build and test their own coffee can radars with primary support from fellow participants in a crowd sourced fashion. Instruction will be provided through pre-recorded lessons focusing on various fabrication and testing steps needed to build a simple, low cost radar. Students will not only build, but test, tune and experiment with the radar that they construct. Several Radar operating modes will be supported through the distribution and explanation of processing code written in Matlab. These operating modes include Doppler, ranging, and synthetic aperture radar imaging.
Participants do not have to be radar engineers but it helps to have at least a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or physics and interest in any of the following: electronics, electromagnetics, signal processing, physics, or amateur radio. It is recommended that you have some familiarity with MATLAB. Each participant is required to bring a laptop (with a stereo-audio input) with MATLAB installed as this will be used for data acquisition and signal processing.
